Formula E: New York E-Prix 2022 – Preview

The final stint of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship gets underway with the New York City E-Prix

  • Stoffel Vandoorne: “New York might not have been the best hunting ground for us in the past, but hopefully we can change that this year and come home with a good result.”
  • Nyck de Vries: “Marrakesh might not have delivered the results we hoped for, but I like to look at the bright side. I’m hoping to be able to take the positive momentum we had into this coming race weekend in New York. New York is an incredible city, so I am looking forward to two great races.”
  • Ian James: “Although we’ve had some great results earlier in the season, we weren’t able to realise our potential in Marrakesh. However, we understand the reasons behind the shortfall and are looking to regain our competitive edge at this event. A double header here will bring plenty of excitement to the street of New York City – and we’re up for the fight!”

The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team heads for New York City this weekend (16/17 July) for rounds eleven and twelve of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The street circuit in Brooklyn will be hosting the all-electric racing series for the fifth time.

Since New York City first appeared on the race itinerary in season three (2016/17), four double-headers have so far been contested there. These eight Formula E races have produced six different winners, with only Sam Bird lifting the trophy more than once. The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team made its debut on the streets of New York City last season.

The 2.32km street circuit runs through the Red Hook district and features 14 corners. The activation zone for Attack Mode is on the outside at Turn 10, the time loss is 1.1 seconds. The best overtaking opportunities are in turns 1 and 6. On the start/finish straight, the race cars reach a top speed of 219 km/h before turn 1.

After ten of 16 races on the current calendar, Edoardo Mortara (139 points) leads the Drivers’ World Championship by 11 points ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne (128). Stoffel Vandoorne is close behind in third place on 125 points, with Nyck de Vries trailing in seventh on 73 points. The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team (198 points) occupies third place in the Team World Championship behind Venturi Racing (205) and DS Techeetah (203).

The race weekend in New York City begins with a half-hour free practice session on Friday evening. There will be a further practice session before qualifying and the race itself on both Saturday and Sunday (start time 18:04 BST).

Comments ahead of the New York City E-Prix 2022

Stoffel Vandoorne:

“I’m looking forward to being back in New York. It’s a fantastic city and it’s great to race there. New York might not have been the best hunting ground for us in the past, but hopefully we can change that this year and come home with a good result. We have a very intense month ahead of us with the last six races of the season. It’s important now to put in a very good final run and just give everything, leave nothing on the table, make no mistakes and then we’ll see how it goes. But I’m traveling to New York with confidence and looking forward to being back on track.”

Nyck de Vries:

“Marrakesh might not have delivered the results we hoped for, but I like to look at the bright side; there were definitely some positives we have taken away from that weekend. I’m hoping to be able to take the positive momentum we had into this coming race weekend in New York. New York is an incredible city, so I am looking forward to two great races.”

Ian James, Team Principal:

“When you think of Formula E, you think not just of exciting racing, but also exciting locations. With the city of New York providing the backdrop to this weekends’ race, I think that couldn’t be more true. We’ve already been to some amazing places so far this season and I’m thrilled to add New York City to the list of races in Season 8.

As a team, one other thing we’re hoping to add to this weekend is our points total in the World Championship standings. Although we’ve had some great results earlier in the season, we weren’t able to realise our potential in Marrakesh. However, we understand the reasons behind the shortfall and are looking to regain our competitive edge at this event.

A double header here will bring plenty of excitement to the street of New York City – and we’re up for the fight!”
